Xavier Embarrasses LSQC in PAYA Juniors

Last year’s runner-up Xavier School, using its relentless full court pressure and running game, demolished the Lourdes School of Quezon City Trojans, 69-35 for their second straight victory in the Philippine Athletic Youth Association tournament.

The game started off with a 3-point play from RP Youth U-16 mainstay, Isaac Go, and the Stallions never looked back. They utilized their height advantage to control the boards, which led to their transition offense. Gian Go led the balanced Stallion attack with a game-high 16 points with able support from Jarrell Lim and John So who finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Xavier mentor, Coach Owen Oliva, insisted to share the ball and incorporate the big men into the game, in which his players obediently followed. He also stressed the importance to run the ball but once the defense is set, to fluidly run their offense. The boys obliged to Coach Owen’s instructions with ten of his thirteen players scoring at least 2 points each.

The PAYA tournament is no longer a pushover league with defending champion Rizal Technological University (RTU) and the entry of National University (NU) makes this annual high school tournament a very competitive one.

The Scores:

Xavier – 69: G. Go 16, Lim 11, So 10, I. Go 8, Ejercito 8, Hong 7, Lapez 3, Ongchoco 2, Tan 2, Fernando 2, Sy 0, Puyat 0.

Quarter Scores: 24-7, 36-19, 59-25, 69-35.
