I am my Brother's Keeper

Today is not the day I blog about personal achievements and the scores of the basketball games a while ago. For those who are eager to know, the Xavier PRADA team won 93-55 with Neil Dy scoring a career high 22 points plus a number of rebounds. His first career double-double. For the second game, the Xavier PAYA team lost to De La Salle Zobel. I didn't bother to check the score for I played horribly and my brother suffered an unconfirmed dislocated right shoulder.

Why did I decide to write about my brother's dislocated right shoulder? It seems too harsh on my part but I just wanted it to get it out of my head. Basketball is a physical game. People can get hurt, banged up, and even effed' for playing the game they love. My brother as a young kid hated the game. He hated running. He hated shooting. He hated everything that has to do with the game he now loves. But through gradual persuading, he finally enjoys playing the game. Through hard work, sheer will power, and a gradual growth spurt, by the way he is still growing, he is now slowly but surely becoming the player we expected.

In the game we played a while ago against a "dirty" La Salle Zobel team, my brother went up for a rebound, just like he always does. On the way down, a La Salle player hooked his shoulder and with the momentum, his shoulder went out of place thus it became dislocated. I saw my brother wince and cry in pain down the floor. I think he was crying for two reasons. One, it was painful. Two, the frustration. My brother has sacrificed a lot to get where he is now in his so-called "Basketball Career". He worked his tail end off during the summer in practicing with the RP Youth U-16 team. He finally has come to his senses and listens to my advice on his game.

After seeing my brother with a serious injury. I felt very bad. I wanted to immediately get back to the player who did this to him. I understand that basketball is a physical game but deliberately injuring another person is a much different thing. I felt bad for my brother because I understood the pain and the sacrifice he made to get to where he is.

I believe God has a greater purpose for my brother. I wouldn't think He will just injure him for no apparent reason. I hope this will serve as a wake-up call for my brother. He should understand that with his height, he should be dominating but I won't rush him. I hope he also understands that his body is weak and he should spend time or even double time to strengthen his body!

To the Zobel player who injured my brother, I am pissed off at you but time will come and my brother will get back!

My brother will be back! I GUARANTEE IT!!

P.S. La Salle parents are also disrespectful people and they should have their attitudes checked.

Xavier Cruises Against LSGH in Fr. Martin Tilt

Xavier School, using their run-and-gun offense, cruised past La Salle Greenhills, 88-56, in the first game of the Fr. Martin tournament last Sunday, July 24, 2011.

Xavier opened the game capitalizing on their height advantage and imposing their will down low. And as the game progressed, Xavier also used its daunting full court man-to-man press to score numerous fastbreak layups. Xavier played with no let up his Coach Jonathan “Budds” Reyes told his players to continue to pressure their opponents and execute on offense.

Youth Olympic Games veteran, Jeron Teng, finishing with a game-high 19 points followed by Gian Go and Jarrell Lim with 10 points each.

La Salle was never in contention throughout the game and Coach Budds shuffled his players for them to have more exposure. His players rewarded the gesture as they all scored at least 2 points each.

The team is primarily composed of seniors and juniors with the inclusion of 3 sophomores namely RP Youth U-16 mainstay Isaac Go, Alaska Jr. NBA Ambassador Jarrell Lim, and Isko Sy. The tournament will also serve as their exposure tournament as they prepare to defend their Tiong Lian championship later this year.

The Scores:

Xavier – 88: Teng 19, G. Go 10, Lim 10, I. Go 9, Yao 9, Ayuste 8, Sy 7, Cabero 6, So 4, Susmerano 2, Dy 2, Yap 2.

Quarter Scores: 25-12, 51-26, 67-36, 88-56.

Xavier Embarrasses LSQC in PAYA Juniors

Last year’s runner-up Xavier School, using its relentless full court pressure and running game, demolished the Lourdes School of Quezon City Trojans, 69-35 for their second straight victory in the Philippine Athletic Youth Association tournament.

The game started off with a 3-point play from RP Youth U-16 mainstay, Isaac Go, and the Stallions never looked back. They utilized their height advantage to control the boards, which led to their transition offense. Gian Go led the balanced Stallion attack with a game-high 16 points with able support from Jarrell Lim and John So who finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Xavier mentor, Coach Owen Oliva, insisted to share the ball and incorporate the big men into the game, in which his players obediently followed. He also stressed the importance to run the ball but once the defense is set, to fluidly run their offense. The boys obliged to Coach Owen’s instructions with ten of his thirteen players scoring at least 2 points each.

The PAYA tournament is no longer a pushover league with defending champion Rizal Technological University (RTU) and the entry of National University (NU) makes this annual high school tournament a very competitive one.

The Scores:

Xavier – 69: G. Go 16, Lim 11, So 10, I. Go 8, Ejercito 8, Hong 7, Lapez 3, Ongchoco 2, Tan 2, Fernando 2, Sy 0, Puyat 0.

Quarter Scores: 24-7, 36-19, 59-25, 69-35.

Xavier Demolishes San Beda, 106 – 85

The Xavier Golden Stallions led by back-to-back Tiong Lian Most Valuable Player, Jeron Teng and RP Youth U-16 mainstay, Kyles Lao, defeated the quick and pestering San Beda squad last Saturday for their second straight win, 106-85.

The Stallions started off slow and sloppy with San Beda capitalizing on their speed advantage, which forced Xavier coach, Jonathan “Budds” Reyes, to call an early timeout. The Stallions adjusted by experimenting with their second stringers early in the game. Kyles Lao scored 15 of his 24 points in the 1st canto, a lot coming from fastbreak lay-ups. San Beda just stayed patient with their offense and maximized on their second chance opportunities to keep the game close despite their size disadvantage. San Beda hotshot and RP Youth U-16 mainstay, Andre Caracut, led the Red Cubs with 17 points, 11 of which came in the 1st half.

The 3rd quarter was an exciting slugfest with both teams exchanging baskets in a blistering pace but that was about to change come payoff period. In the 4th quarter, “Mr. 104”, Jeron Teng, went on a scoring rampage, scoring 19 of his game-high 43 points in the 4th quarter with most coming on fadeaway jumpshots and San Beda couldn’t do anything to stop him.

This is the first year that Xavier joined this annual tournament, which pits the different high school teams against each other. This would serve as the Stallions preparation for the upcoming Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball League where the Stallions will go for an unprecedented 5-peat.

The Scores:

Xavier – 106: Teng 43, Lao 24, Lim 13, Sy 8, Go 6, Yao 6, Ayuste 4, Yap 2, So 0, Dy 0, Cabero 0.

San Beda – 85: Caracut 17, Decapia 16, Guntang 11, Abuda 10, Diputado 8, Villanueva 7, De Villeres 6, Morante 3, L. Villanueva 3, Mercado 2, Morante 2, Miranda 2, Agcaoili 0, Garcia 0.

Quarter Scores: 30-26, 52-47, 77-72, 106 -85.

Salutations

This is just me, Gian, a regular student, basketball player, writer, and most of all, basketball fanatic. Here in this site, I will post mostly my work for proper documentation and archiving of my sports articles since the site last year of our school paper, Stallion, is currently down and forever will be unoperational.

I do not foresee this becoming a successful blog other than the players themselves looking if they made it to the headlines but if it does, I thank all of you in advance.

Man on a Mission!
